A 10-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARREL SPORTING GUN BY JOHN MANTON & SON, LONDON, serial no. 10076,
for 1828, with browned octagonal to sixteen-sided to round 32in. barrel, the top-flat near breech engraved in script 'JOHN MANTON & SON DOVER STREET' (rubbed), engraved breech-block with large vented platinum plug, scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and foliate scroll engraved bar-action lock, the engraving inhabited by serpents and signed 'JNO. MANTON & SON, PATENT', the lockplate forwards of the hammer extended upwards to end flush with the top of the hooked breech, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (crack between tip of top-tang and lock tail), iron furniture, two escutcheoned barrel keys and original brass mounted ramrod, some loss to engraved detail on furniture
Provenance: W.K. Neal and D.H.L Back's essential reference work 'The Manton Supplement' mentions this shotgun on page 74. The lock is similar to one illustrated in plate 145 found in the first volume by the same authors, 'The Mantons: Gunmakers'
