A RARE UNITED STATES BILLINGS AND SPENCER MULTIBLADE SCREWDRIVER, circa 1900, steel with a wooden handle, the case contains four different sized screwdriver heads that swivel out from a central shaft when the retaining screw is removed, the case has patent dates of 1892 and 1896 marked near the handle and the company's name and address at the opposite end; this item was designed by inventor Christopher Miner Spencer, the man who designed the Spencer Rifle used in the Civil War; in 1869, Spencer founded a partnership with Billings in Hartford, Connecticut (Billings & Spencer) that made hand and machine tools but was mostly known for the manufacture of manufacture sewing machines
