AN UNUSUAL .451 PERCUSSION PATTERN 1863 WHITWORTH MILITARY RIFLE, SIGNED ENFIELD, no visible serial number, dated 1863, with 25 in. steel barrel marked 'WHITWORTH PATENT', Enfield inspection and period proof-marks, beaded foresight, lock with crown over 'V.R.' plus lock-viewer's mark over '1863 / ENFIELD' and 'S.R.', walnut stock with butt stamped '154', barrel bands, trigger-guard and butt-plate with Enfield inspection marks, barrel bands and butt-plate with what appears to be original blue. front end reduced by some 9 in., barrel smooth-bored and cleaned of finish, script and proof-marks rubbed but fully legible, modern proof-marks applied, original cleaning rod similarly shortened with blinded pitting, sling swivels removed, 40 1/2 in. overall
