AN EXTREMELY RARE .600 NEEDLEFIRE DOERSCH & BAUMGARTEN MODEL 1861 BOLT-ACTION RIFLE, serial no. 2292,
circa 1862, with 'in the white' 36 1/2in. round barrel, block and blade fore-sight, quadrant rearsight, octagonal form breech with matching number bolt, rear-mounted spatulate bolt-handle with auxiliary cocking piece behind, walnut full-stock fitted with regulation iron mounts including trigger guard with raised lower tang, sling swivels and under-barrel clearing-rod, good condition

Provenance: The inventors of this rifle were Johannes Doersch and Cramer Von Baumgarten of Suhl who attempted to remedy what they considered defects in the Dreyse needle-gun, by shortening the needle and moving the bolt-handle to the rear of the receiver producing a shorter, more compact and faster to use action. The system was tested by the British Ordnance authorities and extensively tested in Italy where it was almost adopted but for problems with Italian made ammunition. The system was finally adopted by the small German state of Schaumberg Lippe in 1861, and it is believed that only a few thousand were made. Its issue was short lived as the forces of this state were incorporated into the Prussian army in 1867 making this rifle an exceptionally rare and interesting variation of the Dreyse
