issue dated for September 1856, with 24in. pipe-backed quill-tipped blade, ricasso with traces of a maker's mark and ordnance stamps, chequered composite grips, brass cross-guard with quillioned muzzle-ring and rolled quillion opposite, brass pommel with working spring and marked 'V' over '12.D.M.S.C.' over '20', blade stained with some frosting and complete with its brass-mounted leather scabbard
