* WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS
A .44-40 'MODEL 1873' LEVER-ACTION REPEATING SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 349768B,
for 1890, with octagonal 24 1/4in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, elevating buck-horn rear-sight, the top-flat of barrel signed 'WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.' and with the usual 1866 and 1860 patent dates, calibre marking at breech, sideplated slab-sided receiver with sliding dust-cover and brass cartridge lifter, exposed hammer, the top-tang marked 'MODEL 1873', walnut butt-stock with crescent heel-plate with central trap, walnut fore-end and full-length magazine, lightly cleaned of finish, with a certificate of proof and a letter stating the rifle was recovered during the Gallipoli Campaign

Provenance: A letter accompanying this Lot states that this rifle was sent from Winchester Repeating Arms Co. to Turkey in 1891. It was recovered from a trench in Gallipoli in 1915 and brought back to England being used as a splint on a soldier's leg! The grandfather of the vendor, a Mr W. A Pratchett, was given it at the dockside. He kept the rifle until around 1940, when he traded it for a pistol (for his wife to defend herself with if the invasion happened). The vendor was able to buy it back from a local man in the late 1970's and has been in his possession ever since
