AN EXTREMELY FINE 18-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN WITH ETCHED DAMASCUS BARRELS, serial no. 7966,
for 1836, with 30in. etched and textured barrels 'in the white' signed on the variegated damascus top-rib 'WM. & JN. RIGBY, DUBLIN', moulded colour hardened breech-blocks with platinum lines and vents, the rib-end acanthus leaf engraved blending into the damascus patterning, fully engraved long top-strap with scroll and rope-twist designs, border, scroll and gamescene engraved back-action locks, the bars extending below the breeches and signed within banners 'WM. & JN. RIGBY', engraved dolphin headed hammers, figured walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron heel-plate with engraved top-spur (traces of blued finish), engraved trigger guard bow and tang in the white, rolled ends to the ramrod thimbles and original mahogany ramrod


Provenance: D.H.L. Back's publication 'Great Irish Gunmakers, Messrs Rigby' (1st edition 1992) mentions this shotgun on page 79 as being 'A best double gun, cased, of 18 bore and with 30in. barrels' and was made for Sir F. Dunbar, 42 Highlanders at a finished cost of £38.17.0. The current firm of Rigby inform us that the special etched finish on the barrels was known as 'pickled', and was a Rigby speciality
