AN 11-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 1150,
circa 1815, converted from flintlock to patchlock and then to percussion, with sixteen-sided to round rebrowned 31 3/4in. barrel, moulded girdle at the intersection, bead fore-sight, the breech end signed in large gilt block letters 'W. SMITH, LONDON', squared breech with platinum line and engraved plug, trophy engraved top-tang, border engraved bar-action lock with floral detail and signed 'WILLIAM SMITH, LISLE ST. LONDON', patchlock-style hammer with conventional nipple, walnut half-stock finely chequered at the wrist, engraved iron furniture 'in the white', white metal barrel-key escutcheons and fore-end tip, brass tipped mahogany ramrod
Provenance: Many William Smith gunmakers traded in London, but this particular William (one of 19 recorded) was apprenticed to John Joyner in 1766 and traded from various addresses throughout his career, his period at No.2 Lisle Street being between 1806-1816. By 1812 he had been appointed Gunmaker Ordinary to the Prince Regent, to King George IV by 1817 and to the Emperor of Russia in 1820. He was succeeded by his son, Samuel Smith in 1825
