AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE HYTHE SCHOOL OF MUSKETRY PRIZE TANKARD PRESENTED IN 1863, HEADED "PRIZE OF 1st SECTION. HYTHE. MARCH 1863",
a large and ornate nickelled pewter tankard with hinged lid and glass bottom, standing 8in. high with a 4 3/4in. base, handle with a shell thumb-piece, engraved 'Prize of 1st. Section. Hythe. March 1863 / Mahon, Lt. & Capt. Gren.Gds. / FOR GREATEST NUMBER OF POINTS. 1st Class. 3rd PERIOD', followed by the names and regiments of nine captains and lieutenants, engraving fresh and clear, glass bottom free from scratches and chips, nickelling worn in places, particularly the lid and handle, the rim of the lid with a little denting and two shallow dents on the back of the body
Provenance: At the time this tankard was presented, Lieutenant and Captain Arthur Philip Viscount Mahon of the Grenadier Guards had recently been appointed as Instructor of Musketry at Hythe. The Hythe School of Musketry had opened ten years earlier in 1853. The officers mentioned on the tankard would have been using the Pattern 1853 Rifled Musket
