A SCARCE .32-40 (W&B) MARLIN-BALLARD TARGET RIFLE, serial no. 29406,
circa 1895 and possibly a No.10 Schuetzen 'Junior' model, but with half-round, half octagonal blued 28in. barrel, folding globe front-sight, the top of barrel drilled and tapped for a telescope (holes fitted with blanking screws), moulded plain frame, the left side below bridge marked 'MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.' over 'BALLARD'S PATENT NOV 5 1861', traces of colour, central falling-breech and hammer, the wrist fitted with a mid-range vernier sight, chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock, raised cheek-piece, nickel-plated semi-scheutzen heel-plate, colour hardened finger-lever with full loop, single plain trigger and chequered walnut splinter fore-end, much finish throughout
Provenance: This example differs only from the specification for the normal No. 10 Scheutzen 'Junior' in that it has a 28in. as opposed to a 32in. barrel. It does not appear to have been shortened
