AN UNUSUAL .450 (No.1 MUSKET) DEELEY-EDGE-METFORD FALLING-BLOCK MATCH RIFLE, serial no. 24 (415),
circa 1879, with 32 1/2in. reblued round barrel, block-mounted micro-adjustable spirit level tunnel fore-sight, no provision for rear-sight, the top of barrel signed 'WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO. 170 NEW BOND ST. LONDON' and 'METFORD'S PATENT RIFLING' Deeley-Edge patent slab-sided falling-block action engraved with borders and scrolls around a central bordered cartouche signed 'DEELEY-EDGE-METFORD PATENT MATCH RIFLE' and 'MANUFACTURED BY WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO', the right with full border and rose scroll engraving, off-set finger lever, long-range ladder vernier sight to top-tang at wrist, chequered walnut pistol-grip butt-stock with chequered iron heel-plate, nocksform marked '1878' within a triangle, plain beavertail fore-end with moulded side-cheeks and cross wedge fastener with white-metal oval escutcheons (small loss to underside caused by ejector leg), the rifle apparently modified for use in a bench clamp, possibly for ammunition testing, evidenced by a mount hole bored through the heel, a moulded depression for a clamp centrally around the fore-end, a machined depression to the left side of nocksform (partially obscuring the original serial number '415') and a series of blanked-off apertures, one in the left central side of receiver and two further to the left side of wrist
