AN UNUSUAL .577/450 MARTIN HENRY MARK II SERVICE RIFLE INDIAN SMOOTHBORE CONVERSION TO .577/.476. UNSIGNED, serial number 12235, circa late 1880s converted early 20th Century, with 32 1/2 in. sighted barrel stamped 'N. S. / B I L' and British inspection marks, bridge with 'sold-out-of-service' and 'F E', plus 'F A / 12235' and a small 'K B / 3' in an oval, falling block action with short lever, receiver also with 'F A / 12235', ''sold-out-of-service' and 'F E' marks, plus traces of the original crown marking (all other original marks ground off) full stock, butt with faint markings including an indistinct roundel, many parts with WD and Broad Arrow markings, original ladder sight removed as part of the conversion process, worn with staining and rust, metalwork painted black; smoothbore conversions were used for riot control firing .577/476 buckshot cartridges and were predominantly Mark IV Martinis converted in the 1920s and 30s, however, some Mark II Martinis were converted earlier in the century; 'F A' is the factory code for Fort William Arsenal
