A COMPOSED PAIR OF A 30-BORE AND A 70-BORE JAPANESE TANEGASHIMA MATCHLOCK MUSKETS, no visible serial numbers,
circa 1865, the first with rounded octagonal 41 1/2in. barrel, offset vase muzzle, block and blade fore-sight, block rear-sight, side-mounted pan at breech with carved flash-guard (rainproof cover absent), brass lockplate with iron serpentine and exposed brass mainspring, fruitwood full-stock of typical form inlet with engraved brass chrysanthemum devices, a lion and rolling clouds, guarded button trigger and unidentified 'mon' to underside of butt, the second similar but with octagonal 42in. barrel, no flash-guard, lock missing serpentine and much of its mainspring, similar decoration except for the 'mon', both ramrods absent
