AN 18-BORE FLINTLOCK 'QUEEN ANNE' PISTOL SIGNED P. GANDON, LONDON, no visible serial number,
circa 1740, with turn-off round 5 1/2in. cannon barrel with moulded and carved bands at each intersection and muzzle, engraved breech signed 'LONDON', London proofs, side-hammer boxlock action with radiused edges and signed 'P. GANDON' below the recumbent frizzen spring, swan-necked cock with rounded top-jaw, shallow pan, walnut grip with bulbous pommel, white metal grotesque mask butt-cap and martial trophy sideplate, trigger guard bow safe
Provenance: This pistol is almost certainly the work of Peter Gandon who traded from various addresses around London between 1710 to becoming a Contractor to Ordnance in 1744. However, it is possibly also the product of his son, also Peter, who became free of the Gunmaker's Company in 1736 and was also in line to be a contractor to ordnance from 1749. However, this was cancelled due to "his want of expedition and the indifference of his work"
