A RARE .31 PERCUSSION MANHATTAN FIREARMS CO. FIVE-SHOT FIVE CYLINDER STOP SERIES 1 POCKET REVOLVER, serial no. 252,
circa 1858, with octagonal 4in. barrel signed on the top-flat 'MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MANUF'G CO. NEW YORK', bead fore-sight, the hammer nose with rear-sight notch, plain open iron frame, plain five-shot cylinder with five locking notches, single action mechanism, iron grip-straps and trigger guard, smooth flared walnut grips and articulated under-barrel rammer
Provenance: The noted gun historian Norman Flayderman notes in his 9th Guide To American Firearms that a handful (three at the time of writing in 2007) of Manhattan series 1 pocket revolvers had been found without engraving and with only five cylinder stops as opposed to the normal ten. All have serial numbers below 500. Whether this is one of the three recorded by Flayderman or whether it is a new discovery has not been established
