for 1879, 26in. sleeved nitro barrels (in 1969), the rib re-engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER NEW BOND STREET LONDON "PATENT BREECH LOADER"' and gold-inlaid '2' at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, carved fences, striker discs, ornate manual tang safety with 'SAFE' detail, rebounding back-action locks with low-spurred hammers of hare's-ear form, the breasts of the hammers striking the firing pins, sidelever cocking, fine acanthus scroll engraving with ornate bordering, the lockplates with 'CHARLES LANCASTER'S PATENT. LONDON.' in scrolling banners, the action bar with 'CHARLES LANCASTER'S PATENT' to the sides, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 3/8in. highly-figured stock including scroll-engraved ebonite buttplate, Hackett snap fore-end with shaped finger recess at the tip, the heel of the stock and the fore-end with oval white-metal escutcheons numbered '2', the stock with oval escutcheon bearing the Hermon family crest, weight 6lb. 2oz., with a Teales fleece-lined leather slip
