* A RARE .577 (SNIDER) C.G. HARSTON & CO. PATENT FALLING-BLOCK RIFLE, serial no. 258166 (72),
circa 1870, probably experimental, with round 29 1/2in. barrel, block and blade fore-sight, elevating Enfield style rear-sight, brazed bayonet lug removed from near muzzle, later serial number '258166' added near breech, near concealed under-lever action with dropping feed-ramp, the top-tang marked 'C.G. HARSTON & CO. PATENT No. 72', walnut full-stock, iron furniture, the heel-plate with central trap (door absent), shaped under-lever with rotating safe behind the trigger blade, two barrel-bands and provision for clearing rod (swivels and rod absent, worn)


Provenance: Charles Greville Harston was a career soldier in the British Army. He is best known for attempting to make a magazine system for the Martini-Henry, but also experimented with other Martini-Henry style rifles of his own design, this being but one. They are seldom encountered
