for 1813 with later conversion to percussion circa 1820-25, probably by the maker, with 30in. browned laminated barrels, elevated top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON HANNOVER SQUARE LONDON', bead fore-sight, engraved rib-end at breech, border and scroll engraved top-tang, flat border and scroll engraved lock inhabited by serpents and with clipped tail, 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT' signature forwards of the slab-sided hammers, each hammer with detachable 'pellet-lock' nose, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (cracked below left under-horn), iron furniture and brass-tipped mahogany ramrod, the whole an older refinish
