A 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 3406,
for 1876, 29 3/4in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels (in 1979), the rib engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63 PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/2 choke, action flats marked with Purdey double bite patent use number 7281, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863 and also marked 'J.D. & S patent action 3406', carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks, grip safety (at fault on rear trigger), fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, the triggerguard with '2', brushed bright and reblued finish overall,, 14 3/8in. highly-figured stock including horn buttplate, fore-end with semi-concealed Anson push rod release, weight 6lb. 8oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed (letter from them dated 1979 included with Lot) that the gun was completed on the 6th September 1876 as No.2 of a pair of double-barrelled hammer guns with 'Purdey-type' toplevers. No barrel length is recorded
