A FINE 10-BORE (2 5/8IN.) DOUBLE-BARRELLED BAR-IN-WOOD TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 3570,
for 1879, 29in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels (in 1953), the rib engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63 PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH.' and with fine acanthus scroll detailing at the breech end, the tubes with finely engraved bands at the breech ends, 2 5/8in. chambers, bored approx. 1/2 choke in both, slender sculpted toplever and finely faceted top strap, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks, action incorporating J. Purdey patent locking bolt, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, use number 9486, the action, lockplates and furniture finely engraved with scrolling acanthus with varied ornate bordering, the lockplates involving scrolling banners engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON, the underside with a central Celtic ring, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, 13 5/8in. highly-figured stock (cast on for the left shoulder) including 3/8in. ebonite buttplate, fore-end with semi-concealed Anson push rod release, stock and fore-end chequered, weight 7lb. 4oz.


Provenance: We are kindly supplied with a copy from the makers records, showing this was one of two guns Charles Gordon Esq. ordered on the 25th April 1879.
The order is listed as:
"Double C.F.B.L. Gauge 10 no. 3570. Toplever skeleton action, cast of stock at comb 1 3/8in. 1/16, as at heel 1 7/8 1/16, Length of stock 14 1/2 full as at nail 14 5/8 full, as at toe 15. Weight of gun 7lb. 6oz. strikers & springs. Ansons patent fore-part. Length of barrels 29in.
