A 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. '2399',
circa 1875, serial number on barrel loop only, 30in. sleeved nitro barrels (in 1980), retaining original rib engraved 'James McCririck Ayr' (rubbed), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, single-bite snap toplever action, possibly a variation on W. Ansell patent bolting mechanism, patent no. 2349 of August 7th 1872, operating a single sprung T-cross section bolt locking into the rear lump and extractor, action flats marked 'ECLIPSE TRADEMARK' and an 'A' in a triangle over 'PATENT. no. 217', hollowed flats, carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with large dolphin hammers, grip safety, fine acanthus scroll engraving with varied ornate borders, the lockplates with central scenes of pointer, the underside with a scene of a wading hunter with dog and game, the triggerguard with two further pointers, brushed and blued finish, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock with engraved steel heel and toe plates, wooden insert to centre, fore-end with Anson push rod release (missing finial), weight 6lb. 14oz.
