Product Details

A RARE UNITED STATES MODEL 1941 JOHNSON RIFLE BAYONET,
with 7 5/8in. triangular blade, full-length front and back flutes, 11 7/8in. overall, mounts to the rifle by a flat spring, unnumbered (suggestive of US war-time use; it is believed only those used by the Netherlands were serial numbered) complete with original leather scabbard stamped '800' on belt-loop, appears service-worn, scabbard with failed stitching on tap loop and scabbard tip

Provenance: The M1941 Johnson Rifle was an American short-recoil operated semi-automatic rifle designed by Melvin Johnson prior to World War II. It competed unsuccessfully with the U.S. M1 Garand Rifle but was used in limited numbers by the US Marines, with whom it was popular and there were repeated requests to increase their supply. However, it lacked the support of US Army Ordnance, which had already invested considerable sums in the development of the M1 Garand. Post-war, it was purchased by both Chile and The Netherlands, and was also used by the anti-Castro Brigade 2506 during the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion
