manufactured 1863-64, with round 30in. blued barrel, block and blade fore-sight (for socket bayonet), folding ladder rear-sight, the top of receiver at breech marked 'SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS.' over 'PATENTED MARCH 6 1860', slab-sided receiver with raised and moulded bolsters at head, external lock with side-hammer, walnut butt-stock (hairline crack running back from lock-tail), traces of a martial cartouche to left side of head, iron heel-plate with centrally stored tubular magazine, finger-lever forming the trigger-guard bow, full-length walnut fore-end with three iron barrel-bands and nose-cap, strong traces of finish

Provenance: It was with these 'Army Model' Spencers that Custer's Fifth Michigan Cavalry were armed at Gettysburg, although it is assumed that the serial numbers of their rifles were in the range of '100' to '1500'. Only 11470 of this model were manufactured and delivered to U.S. forces during the Civil War
