AN INTERESTING PATTERN 1897 GEORGE V INDIAN INFANTRY OFFICER'S DRESS SWORD BY WILKINSON OWNED BY DEREK C. GOODFELLOW, 1910-1989,
serial number 61936 dates to 1930, with 32 1/2in. unsharpened edges with central fuller to each side, etched to both sides with foliate scroll-work, crown and Royal coat-of-arms, George V Imperial cypher and two panels one blank, the other with the initials 'D.C.G.', blade spine with serial number, ricasso with brass Wilkinson proved plug to one side and maker's details over, nickelled steel hilt, pierced bowl guard with George V Imperial cypher, wire-bound fish-skin grip, with a clean and lightly used brown leather field scabbard marked for Wilkinson, a nickelled steel scabbard with two suspension rings, plus a brown leather case marked for Wilkinson with the flap carrying the initials 'D. C. G.', some small patches of staining to the blade, stitching failing at the throat of the field scabbard, steel scabbard with rusting at the chape, case worn with the lid separated through failed stitching
Provenance: Derek C Goodfellow 1910-1989. Commissioned into the Beds and Herts Regiment and seconded to the Indian Army. Left arm amputated circa 1934 and invalided out without pension or compensation. Returned to the UK, joined the Colonial Service 1935 and posted to Northern Rhodesia. Served as second-in-command of the Northern Rhodesia Regiment throughout the Second World War before becoming Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Province, a post he held until 1964. Moved to Bechuanaland where he served as the resident magistrate for 6 years before retiring and returning to the UK in 1970. Consigned by the family
