JOHN MANTON, LONDON
A LATE 14-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 10299,
for 1832 and one of the last flintlocks produced by the maker, with 30in. browned laminated London proved barrels, the top-rib signed 'JOHN MANTON AND SON DOVER STREET' (refreshed), squared patent breech-blocks, each inlet with a gold poincon marked 'MANTON PATENT' together with a crown, border and scroll engraved top-tang inhabited by mythical beasts, bevel-edged locks with stepped and clipped tails, angled patent 'U'-shaped pans, engraved roller frizzens, engraved swan-necked cocks with squared jaws, the locks signed 'JOHN MANTON & SON' below a scrolled feathered serpent (some refreshing), walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist and with engraved iron furniture including square-backed trigger-guard, single barrel key and brass-mounted mahogany ramrod
Provenance: Contrary to popular belief, flintlock ignition did not cease the moment the percussion system became mainstream. W. Keith Neal and D.H.L. Back note in their publication 'The Mantons: Gunmakers' a number of flintlocks of both shotgun and pistol configurations around this date, including serial numbers 9759 (1829), 10129 (1831) and 10571 (post 1835)
