the domed section of cowrie measuring 2 1/2in. along its length and mounted with a white metal frame, the raised central section with a hinged lid mimicking the shape of the shell and further mounted with a white metal shield inscribed 'JOHN BOYLE' (some seam separation), together with a photostat file of papers concerning Captain John Boyle of the 96th Pennsylvanian Volunteer Infantry including copies of his invalid discharge papers and a further file detailing the regimental history of the same unit
