Product Details

A SCARCE FRAMED AND GLAZED AMERICAN CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE CERTIFICATE FOR THEODORE JOHNSON, 8TH NEW YORK HEAVY ARTILLERY VOLS.,
dated for the 31st May 1865 and giving his commanding officer as Lieut William Grant, inked margin notes also stating that Johnson was 'unfit for re-enlistment in the Veteran Reserve Corps', the frame measuring approximately 17 1/2in. x 14 1/2in.

Provenance: The Muster Roll for the 8th has the following entry:
JOHNSON , THEODORE.-Age , 23 years. Enlisted, August 7, 1862, at Elba, N . Y. ; mustered in as private, Co. H, One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Infantry, August 14, 1862 (which became the Eighth Artillery, December 19, 1862), to serve three years; wounded, June 3, 1864, at Cold Harbor, Va. ; no further record.

Further online research would seem to suggest that Johnson picked up a severe arm wound at Cold Harbor and that his regiment suffered particularly badly in that engagement sustaining heavy losses
