Provenance: Miles City was a famous cattle town in eastern Montana and the final stopping point for the great Texas cattle-drives of the 1890's. Al Furstnow was a saddler who opened his own saddle shop in the city in August 1894. In December the same year, Charles E. Coggshall, a local rancher, disposed of his livestock and invested in the business, taking a half share, and the firm quickly expanded to become the major saddlery in the area. In 1899, less than five years after the company came into existence, Furstnow and Coggshall split up and went into competition with each other for many years, both with a reputation for quality products. The name Coggshall Saddles continues under the proprietorship of the Miles City Saddlery
