A CASED .408 (PINFIRE) SMOOTH-BORE 'RIFLE' WITH LATER ANNIE OAKLEY TRIBUTE ENGRAVING, serial no. 3444,
the action of Belgian origin circa 1873, with round 26 3/4in. smoothbore barrel, the top near breech signed 'GEORGE H. DAW 57 THREADNEEDLE STREET LONDON' and 'DAW'S .408 PIN-FIRE SMOOTH BORE TARGET GUN', the left side at breech engraved 'LITTLE SURE SHOT', the right side 'WATANYA CICILLA', bead fore-sight, borderline engraved breech-end, the barrel sliding forwards on a dismountable bar to load, borderline and scroll engraved boxlock action with fixed solid fore-end, the upper edges engraved 'RIFLE QUEEN', the action sides signed in large block lettering 'GEORGE H. DAW', offset central hammer, engraved tangs and flat-faced trigger guard bow, chequered walnut straight hand stock, the iron heel-plate fully engraved with scrolls bar for the wording 'RIFLE QUEEN' engraved vertically in parallel between the heel-plate screws, refinished with mild traces of pitting below the finish in isolated areas, in a period oak casing fully relined and compartmented internally in green baize and bearing a gilt plaque inscribed 'ANNIE OAKLEY'S DAWS .408 PINFIRE SMOOTH BORE RIFLE', the outer lid bearing a large circular escutcheon engraved 'RIFLE QUEEN' around the initials 'A.O' and with 'D' ring handle, together with a letter from George H. Daw Gunmakers speculating on the origin and history of the gun and stating that the serial number would indicate post 1875 manufacture (which our research suggests it is not)
