circa 1868, with blued 33in. barrel signed behind the rear-sight 'WHITWORTH PATENT', raised block cut with a dove-tail for a Whitworth tunnel fore-sight (missing), elevating ladder rear-sight graduated to 1000 yds. and numbered to the rifle, colour-hardened squared patent breech with borderline engraved tang and nocksform, colour-hardened borderline engraved bar-action lock and hammer, Whitworth signature and wheatsheaf trademark, sliding safe forwards of the hammer, figured chequered walnut three-quarter military-style stock, colour-hardened patch-box, the hinged lid engraved with a coronet of a continental nobleman above the letter 'S' and a spray of ivy-leaves, blued iron furniture (except trigger-guard tang) and replacement ramrod, the whole retaining much original finish and colour; TOGETHER WITH its original oak compartmented storage case (lid with longitudinal split) and a later pair of mould-blocks
