A RARE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE 11x50.5mm (COMBLAIN) GOVERNMENT PRIZE RIFLE, MODEL 'M1870 BELGIAN COMBLAIN', serial no. 9926,
circa 1872, with blued octagonal to round 33in. barrel (some external pitting), the top-flat inlaid in a gold-bordered panel 'PRIX DU GOUVERNEMENT', the adjacent side-flats inlaid with gold borders surrounding arabesques, brass fore-sight blade, elevating ladder rear-sight mounted on a chisel-engraved brass body, the ladder with the ranges picked out in gold, deeply chisel and relief engraved bronze slab-sided falling-block action (slightly at fault), the left side depicting hounds savaging a boar, the right side with hounds performing the same act on a stag, the carved receiver top stamped 'COMBLAIN BREVETE' together with the serial number and Belgium acceptance marks, central blued hammer, integral chisel-carved top tang, straight-hand walnut butt-stock with chisel-carved and moulded butt-plate, the top-spur featuring the mask of a lion with further raised floral detail to heel and toe, similarly chisel-carved bottom-tang and cocking lever forming the trigger-guard bow, the lever with the mask of a foliate-bearded green-man, walnut three-quarter fore-end with engraved side-screws and mounts near the action, two relief-carved bronze barrel-bands, en-suite bronze nose-cap and under-barrel iron ramrod with chisel-engraved jag-end: TOGETHER WITH a service yataghan bayonet for the same model rifle (not presentation, no scabbard) (2)
