28in. nitro reproved chopperlump barrels (likely shortened), rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET, LONDON. ENGLAND. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, bore dimensions marginal, wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, some pitting, action flat, fore-end iron and triggerguard tang numbered '3', fences finely carved in high relief with rococo scrollwork on a stippled background, removable striker discs, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, arrow cocking-indicators, articulated front trigger, best fine acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, brushed bright finish overall, 15 1/4in. well-figured Prince of Wales grip stock with horn grip-cap, weight 6lb. 14oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories and an Alex. Martin 'Game Plotter'

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed as No.3 of a trio in 1892 for Lord Ashburton.

Francis Denzil Edward Baring, 5th Baron Ashburton (July 1866 - March 1938) gained the rank of Major in the service of the Hampshire Yeomanry (Carabiniers). He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire. He was an ancestor of the Baring banking family.
