TOWER ARMOURIES, LONDON
A RARE .733 PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED CARBINE, MODEL 'PAT. 1853 RIFLED CAPE CARBINE', no visible serial number,
dated for 1854, with 26in. side-by-side barrels, proofs, ordnance marks and sold out of service arrows at breech, small blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight with small elevating ladder, large moulded nipple snails, colour hardened top-tang with shallow sighting groove, borderline engraved back-action shotgun style locks marked with a 'V.R.' and crown device over the signature and date, walnut straight hand half-stock, brass furniture including raised scrolled lower tang, iron saddle-bar and ring to the left hand side and captive iron pan-head ramrod, much original finish appearing unissued and simply 'sold out of service'

Provenance: Less than 900 double carbines were ordered over the years 1847-1854 with the largest order being for 500 smoothbore examples in 1847. It is possible that some of these were rifled at a later date, but rifled or smooth versions seldom appear today
