A GOOD 18-BORE FLINTLOCK BIRDING-GUN BY BAILES, LONDON, WITH SPANISH BARREL, CIRCA 1750, no visible serial number,
42 3/4in. slightly swamped octagonal to round barrel, carved and engraved girdle at the intersection, the breech end inlet with a crowned gold poincon marked 'SALA' and a rectangular poincon with an image of a bull, the side and top-flats inlet with gilt fleur de lys, the left overstamped with London proofs, silver spider fore-sight, the engraved top-tang also with raised and carved sighting notch, plain flat bevel-edged lock signed in script 'BAILES' below the pan and with stepped and pointed tail, unusual internal frizzen-spring, walnut one-piece hand-rail full-stock (crack below lock) carved with a shell behind top-tang, rococco brass escutcheon to wrist, brass heel-plate with engraved top-spur, complex pierced, moulded and engraved brass sideplate, further brass furniture including tulip finial to trigger plate and two ramrod thimbles and throat, three escutcheon-less barrel-keys and probable original worm-tipped ramrod
