A RARE .75 PERCUSSION CARBINE BY W. GREENER FOR 1ST BENGAL CAVALRY (OR SKINNER'S HORSE), CIRCA 1851, serial no. 1838,
with 20in. twist barrel with hook or break-off breech, stamped 'LONDON' and near the breech 'S. H.', swivel rammer hinged at muzzle, borderline engraved lock of early flintlock style with makers name 'W. GREENER', to centre, brass mounted full walnut stock, reduced proportion Brunswick style scroll trigger-guard and a flat style nose-cap incorporating a rammer pipe and buttcap, iron sling bar fitted on the counter lock side
Provenance: The vendor informs us that he acquired this carbine back in the 1970's and it was found in a consignment of arms from the Gwalior Arsenal in India. Skinner's Horse was original formed by Colonel James Skinner in 1803 and renamed the 1st Bengal Irregular Cavalry (Skinner's Horse) in 1840. The regiment purchased 580 carbines of this type in England in 1851, the maker was the famed William Greener of Aston New Town, Birmingham and father of William Wellington Greener
Literature: An exceptionally rare carbine and one of very few known to have survived. This is the actual example illustrated and detailed in David Hardings definitive work Small Arms of the East India Company Vol. 2 pages 497 and 498.
