AN EXTREMELY RARE .180 MARKHAMS PATENT CHICAGO MAPLEWOOD AIR-RIFLE, no visible serial number,

Product Details

AN EXTREMELY RARE .180 MARKHAM'S PATENT CHICAGO MAPLEWOOD AIR-RIFLE, no visible serial number,
manufactured between 1887-1910, with brass smoothbore barrel within the squared maplewood 9 3/4in. barrel section, external wire cocking rods, the receiver and butt of one piece of maplewood stamped on the left side 'CHICAGO AIR RIFLE, MARKHAM'S PATENT', the woodwork finished in its original rosewood stain and remaining in good condition and retaining its rare clearing rod (chip to wood at breech)

Provenance: The Markham Chicago is one of the most elusive junior air-rifles for a collector to acquire. Being made almost entirely of maplewood, they burnt well, and the survival rate is reckoned to be around just 1% of the total production. Those that were not burnt by angry parents suffered insect damage on a grand scale and as a consequence, most collectors have never seen one other than in books
