circa 1890, with 25 1/4in. rifled, round barrel signed 'MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE D'ARMES ET CYCLES DE SAINT-ETIENNE', beaded blade fore-sight, dove-tailed elevating rear-sight locking with a wing-nut, pre-charged cylinder beneath the barrel with knurled decoration numbered '22296', blued action engraved with foliage and scrollwork and stamped with a 'hot air-balloon' trademark, rotating tap for ball, external central hammer, walnut straight-hand butt-stock with chequered wrist, hard-rubber heel-plate embossed with a further air balloon trademark and marked 'PAUL GIFFARD INVENTEUR', colour-hardened iron trigger, engraved guard, the whole retaining much original finish and together with a later engineer-produced filling adaptor
