THE PAYNE-GALLWEY CUP,
with Sheffield hallmarks for 1922 and comprising of a 1lb. 14 1/4oz. sterling silver twin-handled cup with detachable steeple lid on a detachable black glass base, the cup body engraved with a pair of crossed service rifles and inscribed below 'THE PAYNE GALLWEY CUP, PRESENTED TO THE AGWI RIFLE CLUB, FAWLEY, 1922, BY SIR JOHN PAYNE-GALLWEY BART', approximately 13 1/2in. high not including base

Other Notes: The rifle club referred to is the Atlantic Gulf & West Indies Petroleum Co club formed in 1921 when the Fawley refinery site was purchased by Standard Oil (ESSO). The AGWI name only lasted until 1925 when the trophy was replaced with a new cup and rosebowl presented by ESSO.
