for 1878, with octagonal 26in. barrel (traces of finish), the top marked 'WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CT.' over 'KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29 1866 OCTOBER 16 1860', dove-tailed folding ring fore-sight, ladder rear-sight with elevator, no calibre designation at breech or on lifter, receiver with chequered oval thumb-piece to the sliding dust-cover (stronger traces of finish), exposed hammer, model designation to top-tang, walnut straight hand butt-stock with crescent heel-plate, iron finger-lever, brass lifter, walnut fore-end and full-length under-barrel magazine tube, overall length 47in., weight approximately 9 1/2lbs.
