A RARE PAIR OF .44 BOX-LOCK TAP-ACTION FLINTLOCK PISTOLS WITH SPRUNG BAYONETS, SIGNED 'COWLAND', no visible serial numbers,
circa 1800, each with 2 1/4in. barrels numbered '0' through to '4', grooved for barrel key and stamped with Birmingham proof-marks, tap-action box-locks with sliding safeties, with engraved 'stand of arms' on each side, marked 'COWLAND' to the left and 'CHELMSFORD' to the right, slab-sided grips, sliding trigger-guards release a locking bayonet with a 2in. blade, Birmingham proofs on frame in front of trigger-guard, crisp actions, strongly cleaned leaving some trace pitting, barrels frozen, barrel proof-marks faint, 7 1/2in. overall
