A 14-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING SHOTGUN BY JOHN MANTON, LONDON, serial no. 11619,
for the period 1845-49, with 30in. rebrowned barrels, the raised top-rib with white-metal fore-sight bead and signed 'JOHN MANTON & SON, DOVER STREET LONDON' (rubbed and faint), engraved rib-end to breech-block and platinum plugs, scroll engraved top-tang also featuring an engraving of a running spaniel, border, scroll and gamebird engraved locks signed on the bars 'JNO. MANTON & SON PATENT', both locks with a raised projection fitting into the side of the false breech extending fully to the top with the lock-screw passing through the false breech, (left lock mainspring at fault), slab-sided hammers with the noses completely covering the nipples, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist and with short extension in wood retaining the original heel-plate, lower tang with grip-safe marked 'PATENT SAFETY' (rubbed), iron furniture and ebony ramrod with replacement brass tip

Provenance: Whilst not listed in the Manton book or Manton Supplement by Neil & Back, similar guns including serial no. 11614 were produced for the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury
