A 15-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN BY THOMAS BOSS, LONDON, serial no. 684,
for 1846, with twist 30 1/2in. barrels, the top-rib signed 'THOMAS BOSS 73 ST JAMES'S STREET, LONDON' and numbered for one of a pair, fully engraved top-tang, border, scroll and gamescene engraved bar-action locks signed 'THOMAS BOSS', engraved dolphin-headed hammers, chequered walnut half-stock, iron furniture and brass-mounted under-barrel ramrod, finish worn, 46 3/4in. overall, weight approx. 6 1/2lb.

Provenance: This shotgun was ordered as one of a pair (along with no. 685) in 1846 by the Hon. Augustus Irby.
Augustus Anthony Frederick Irby was born at Hedsor House, Burnham in Buckinghamshire on 13th February 1820 to the 3rd Baron Boston. He died in April 1870. There is a letter in Thomas Boss's letters book dated 23rd September 1846 reminding the Hon. Augustus Irby to pay his outstanding bill of £74:2:0 (equivalent to about £7,500 in today's money). The higher cost incurred for the pair of guns on account of their 'unusual' game engraving
