A 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR, serial no. 12550,
for 1890, 28in. nitro barrels (wall thicknesses at 17 and 18, some marks), rib engraved '1' and 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. in both, self-opening treble-grip action with hidden third bite, automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, 'arrow' cocking-indicators, articulated front trigger, best fine border and acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, the underside engraved 'PURDEY'S PATENT', 15 3/4in. figured stock including amateurly-applied 2in. wood extension, weight 6lb. 7oz.

Stock: 14 3/8 1/32in.
Notes:
Action with concealed third bite and intercepting safeties
The gun was returned to Purdey in May 1894 and resold to Lord Napier, for whom the stock was adjusted to 14 1/2in.
14th June 1895: Bend and Cast adjusted, length to be as No. 15,113
September 1919: Repurchased by us, together with No. 15,113
2nd December 1922: The gun was nitro proved and sold to W.T.G. Young. Noted that it had been examined by Lawrence, and could be converted to ejectors. Stock shortened to 14 1/16in.
