dated for 1897 and transcribed as follows:
Dear Mr Kennedy,
I am prepared to be responsible for any damage (crossed out and initialled CJR) loss that may accrue to Manica Trading Co. through the transfer of stand no. 74. Umbali which was held as one of the securities of our bond. As you are aware the Government and myself and the trading co agreed to release this stand for the bond. As I understand the M.T.C. have ceded their interest to a London firm but I should think this guarantee should be sufficient to obtain their signature. Mr C.J. Rhodes.
