Product Details

A HAND WRITTEN LETTER FROM CECIL RHODES TO MR HARRIS,
the undated manuscript written on notepaper printed with Rhodes crest and pasted along top-edge to a supporting board, professional repairs to reverse where folded and transcribing as:

My Dear Harris,
Mr Abe Bailey is anxious to send a half(?) to Mashonaland. You can give him same terms as Smartt and Lord Rothschild and Eichling has.
Mr C.J. Rhodes.

Provenance: Bailey was a diamond magnate working at De Beers. Very successful, the £4,000 he had borrowed in Barberton to invest in a fresh start on the Witwatersrand soon turned into £100,000. Lord Rothschild is probably Leopold de Rothschild and 'Eichling' possibly Herman Eckstein. Harris himself is F. Rutherfoord Harris, former company secretary of the British South Africa Company in 1889
