A 12-BORE 1863 PATENT (SECOND PATTERN) PUSH-FORWARD THUMBHOLE-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 8429, with extra barrels,
27in. original black powder only damascus barrels (shortened), rib engraved 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. cyl. in both;
27in. steel nitro reproved extra barrels (circa 1939, by another) with spuriously signed rib, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke; action incorporating J. Purdey 1863 second patent thumbhole underlever and Purdey 1863 double bite, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, carved percussion fences, patent gold-inlaid 'loaded' indicators, rebounding back-action island locks with dolphin hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, 13 7/8in. replacement semi-pistolgrip stock, weight 6lb. 11oz.

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed in 1871 with 31in. barrels for Capt. H.D. Streatfield.

Henry Dorrien Streatfeild (the family used both spellings of the surname) was born 2nd August 1825 into a landed Kentish family. In the 1871 census, when this shotgun was completed, his occupation is listed as 'Landowner/late Capt, 1st Life Guards'. He died at Chiddingstone, Kent on 27th March 1889.
