for 1874, with 34in. reblued round barrel with octagonal breech (some shallow pitting concealed by fore-end), the top-flat signed 'PATENT NO. 2482' and 'ALEX'R HENRY EDINBURGH AND LONDON' (all renewed) and fitted with a Henry Patent front tunnel-sight, no provision for rear-sight, engraved band to the colour-hardened breech-block, engraved platinum plug, border engraved top-tang with mount for vernier sight (sight included), border engraved bar-action lock signed 'ALEXR HENRY' (colour refreshed), sliding safe forwards of the border engraved hammer (mild pitting to safe), figured walnut half-stock with chequered pistol-grip, border engraved mount for back-position sight at heel integral with the iron heel-plate, engraved trigger-guard bow, engraved iron pistol grip cap with central trap, smooth trigger-blade, horn fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod, together with a period oak case from the same manufacturer compartmented and partially relined in pale brown embossed leatherette and containing a full complement of accessories including the bullet mould, leather covered Alexander Henry Patent powder flask, loading rod (cracked off at tip) and a number of authentic style reproduced accessories, the inside of lid with indented cornered parchment Alexander Henry trade-label
Provenance: This rifle was made for an Andrew Pringle as a 'best quality muzzle-loading .450 match rifle in 1874. Pringle resided in Hawick, Scotland where he was probably involved in the wool industry. He was obviously quite wealthy as he subsequently moved to Craigcleuch House in Langholme, Dumfries-shire, a substantial property. The rifle was exhibited in the Cape Colony South African Exhibition in 1877; whether it was loaned to back to Henry or repurchased by him is not clear.
