28in. black powder only barrels with raised matt rib, the breech end with a banner inscribed 'E. M. REILLY & SO. 502. NEW OXFORD ST. LONDON.', open sights and two folding leaf sights with white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 100, 200 and 300 yards, bead foresight, rib with removable dovetailed plate to fit additional folding ladder sight marked up to 2000, the barrel flats marked with sanskrit characters and 'RM', lightweight action with carved percussion fences, Jones patent rotary underlever, non-rebounding back-action locks, border engraving, partially brushed but retaining traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 14 1/2in. pistolgrip stock (repair at toe) with pistolgrip-cap, sling eyes and steel heel and toe plates, weight 10lb. 5oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories, the case outer with brass plaque marked 'GEO. S. SINCLAIR WEMYSS'

Provenance: George Sackville Sinclair Wemyss (born 1855, died 1882) was JP and DL for the county of Caithness. Having joined the Navy at a young age, he served nearly four years on the Australia station, before resigning his commission in 1879 due to ill health.
The Sinclair family having held Southdun estate since the sixteenth century,upon his return to Scotland, George and his family lived at Hempriggs House whilst Edinburgh architect Hypolite Blanc designed and built a mansion house for the estate. George died before its completion in 1885 and the house was named Sackville House in his memory. It was destroyed by fire in 1930.
