Provenance: The rifle would have been completed circa 1904.

Lieutenant John Nicholas Price Wood, born 1877 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire served with the 12th Royal Lancers in the Boer War and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittenbergen and Relief of Kimberley clasps.

He survived the war and is recorded as being welcomed home in 1902, alongside other returning Boer War soldiers by Mrs Meade-Waldo of Wirksworth Hall (the Meade-Waldo family also owned Hever Castle in Kent at this period) and being presented with a solid silver cup, bought by public conscription.
The Wood family had once owned Wirksworth Hall (which was sadly demolished in 1920 due to subsidence) but had moved to Henley Hall, where in 1962 John Price Wood passed away at the age of 85 holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
