AN EARLY 16 BORE UNSIGNED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN CIRCA 1720, no visible serial number,
having a 31 in. three stage barrel with tapered breech, slightly swamped muzzle, silver fore-sight, plain fixed breech, plain and unmarked lock of rounded form, fitted with a swan-neck cock, the frizzen without bridle, trefoil end to frizzen spring, walnut half-stocked fitted with plain iron mounts, including a large sideplate, the butt of graceful style and proportions with handrail wrist, the wrist with large inset silver escutcheon bearing the original owners initials, the area around the fixed breech tang carved with a shell motif, originally this gun was full stocked and probably with a longer barrel, modified to half stocked during it working life when fashions changed, the barrel with added soldered rammer pipes typical of these conversions
